Minutes of the June 16,
2003 Board meeting
Ninth Annual
Jim Davis Beautification Day -- Jim Snyder estimates that 150-170 volunteers
will participate in this year's beautification day project. Volunteers
will meet at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon)
building located at Colima Road and Dawnhaven at 8 a.m. Participants
must be at least 11 years of age and must bring their own work tools
(i.e. push broom, fan rake, dust pan, or square nosed shovel). The County
will provide gloves, safety vests and bags. HHIA will provide refreshments.
The project will end at noon.
"Welcome to Hacienda Heights" Monument -- Mike Hughes reported
that the monument located on Colima Road west of Azusa Avenue has been
replaced. It had been destroyed by a car that crossed over the median
of the street. Kudos to Steve Feld who pursued the issue with the driver's
insurance company until the sign had been replaced.
July 4th Parade Entry -- Thanks to Charles Norris and his wife, Carol,
for creating an HHIA entry in the July 4th parade. They are designing
a colorful entry that will promote HHIA visibility and membership. The
Board approved spending a maximum of $500 to construct the entry.
Seventh Avenue Storm Drain Project -- The project to reline and repair
the existing storm drain in Seventh Avenue between Clark and Orange
Grove is scheduled to be completed by September. Traffic will be affected
only at locations where entry to the drain must be gained through manholes.
Ninth Avenue Storm Drain Project -- the $4 million storm drain construction
project proposed for the area generally bounded by Seventh/Ninth/Pomona
Freeway/Gale has been postponed until next Spring due to delays in relocating
conflicting utility lines.
Quetmetco Lead Smelter -- The AQMD has formed a Task Force to monitor
activities of the Quemetco lead smelter. This is important because of
recent announcements that this facility is causing an unacceptable cancer
risk to residents of Hacienda Heights. Local residents, Lillian Avery
and Tom Chang are on the committee. To provide more direct communication
between the Task Force and HHIA, the Board approved a motion requesting
AQMD to include the Environmental Chair of HHIA as a member of the Environmental
Justice Committee monitoring the operations of Quemetco.
Shopping Carts -- Rudy Almeida reported that according to the manager
of Vons, twenty shopping carts per week are returned by the cart retrieval
company. This amounts to about ninety shopping carts per month that
are abondoned in the neighborhoods of Hacienda Heights -- just from
Vons alone! It is a misdeamor to remove carts from store property but
is not enforced.
