Minutes of the July 19, 2004 Board meeting

Treasurer Mary Tang reported that HHIA has a current bank balance of $8,881.

California Highway Patrol Officer Joe Zizi reported that Officer Cory Baker will be unable to attend HHIA Board Meetings due to reassignment to community areas caused by the shortage of officers. Seventeen collisions have occurred in Hacienda Heights in 2004, an increase over the same time period in 2003. Speeding, following to close, and failure to observe stop signs played a major role in these incidents. Street racing continues but has declined on Sunday nights. Three deaths are attributed to this activity. More CHP enforcement will be available later in the year with 570 officers being hired by December. Twenty have been requested for our area.

Sheriff's Deputy Saforelli did a presentation on the types of crimes handled by their department. In 2003, there were three homicides in Hacienda Heights. In 2004 thus far, there have been six, a 100% increase. He advised that persons must be at least 16 years old to ride any motor driven bike or scooter on public streets, wear a helmet and be M-2 licensed.

Roel Saldivar announced that he is the Field Representative for Congresswoman Grace Napolitano and urged anyone to call his office for information or assistance with any problem under the jurisdiction of the Congresswoman, at (562) 801-2134.
Scarlett Treu introduced Jose Romo, Manager of the US Bank located at Newton and Hacienda. He announced that the bank will enlarge the community bulletin board as well as give it a fresh coat of paint.

Supervisor's Deputy Dickie Simmons distributed flyers on the West Nile Virus. He also announce a meeting on July 20 at the Swiss Park Banquet Center dealing with the Puente Hills Landfill, Athens Waste, and the Materials Recycling Center as they relate to the expansion of Athens and the roads used to transport the debris for recycling. He also urged attendance at the Tuesday night Concerts in the Park at Schabarum Park at 7 PM.

Yvette Mack, Director of the Steinmetz Senior Center, announced the Casino Royale event scheduled for November 6, from 5 - 9 PM. The event is open to people 21 years and older.
Jim Goethals, Regional Planning Enforcement Officer, is working with County Counsel to develop a civil prosecution program for zoning violations.
The Registrar-Recorder has been invited to make a presentation in August regarding the Corporate Poll Workers Program.

Mary Tang advised that the Youth Science Center has applied for a $10,000 grant to improve the center. The decision will be announced on November 19.

Louis Rodrigues called attention to the serious problem of dumping used motor oil instead of taking it to a recycling center. One gallon can contaminate one million gallons of drinking water. The next waste collection will be at Industry City Hall on July 24.

Membership Chair Jean Robson, has written letters to all life members of record to determine whether they are still residents of Hacienda Heights.

Scott Martin announced that Environmental Justice Workshops are scheduled for July 29, 8 AM to 10 PM, at the San Gabriel Valley Hotel in Baldwin Park Town Center.

Mike Williams announced that a hearing will be held on August 4 regarding the request to install additional wireless equipment on Hacienda Blvd. and Turnbull Canyon Road. He reported that work has begun on the Vagabond Motel project on the old Treats Nursery property.

Rudy Almeida commented that code enforcement problems are continuing on such matters as graffiti, garage conversions, front yard parking and more. The addition of one more code enforcement officer will be welcomed. Mike Williams urged that we give greater support to the County's increasing efforts on this matter.

Lucy Pedregon's dance group arranged to follow the HHIA parade entry to show her affiliation with HHIA, and appreciated the opportunity to provide decorating materials for the association's entry.

Minutes of the June21 HHIA Board meeting were approved.

President Mike Williams cautioned Board Members to refrain from indicating that their views in community meetings represent those of HHIA unless the Board has taken a position on the issue.
