Minutes of the September 20, 2004 Board meeting

All Board Members were present except Jean Robson who was on vacation.  The Secretary's position is vacant.


Minutes of August 16, 2004 business meeting were approved as written and sent to file.


Treasurer Mary Tang reported that the 8/31/04 bank balance was $9,261.06. 
Law Enforcement Updates: California Highway Patrol Officeers were nnable to attend.


Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department – Deputy Mike Soffarelli discussed recent events in Hacienda Heights and provided an update to the crime statistics for the first six months of 2004 for our community. A copy is on file.

 
Programs - No scheduled speaker.

 
Mike Williams discussed a recent action in which a Board Member was suspended from the committee chairman position due to inappropriate behavior. A copy of the letter has been provided to each Board Member.


Code Enforcement Issues.  We were fortunate to have  Lewis Cabriales, current Code Enforcement Officer,  and former officer James Goethals, now assigned to Rowland Heights, to discuss code enforcement in our community.  Both officers are assigned to the Zoning Enforcement unit of the County of Los Angeles. There were approximately 100 citations issued in late August and early September. Many of the audience were recipents of these citations and an informative discussion took the better part of the public meeting portion.  Many code enforcement violations were explained to the attendees.


Community Interest Report: Dickie Simmons, Deputy to Supervisor Don Knabe, Fourth District, County of Los Angeles, reminded everyone that Supervisor Knabe will be having the annual Public Safety Appreciation Luncheon to be held at Pacific Palms, City of Industry on December 1. There is still time to be come a sponsor. Corporate Sponsor fees are $1,000  and offer 10 seats.  Platinum Sponsor fees are $500 and offer 6 seats. Gold Sponsor fees are $250 and offer 4 seats. Silver Sponsor fees/donations are $150 and offer 2 seats. Individual tickets are $25.00 per person.

 
Hsi Lai Temple – Representative Mae Chouu had to leave before being able to discuss current activities.


HHIA Representative on the Puente Hills Landfill Citizens Advisory Committee, Mike Hughes, discussed the latest activities of the committee.
 
Committee Reports:
 
Scott Martin/Programs, Newsletter, and Public Health & Safety: Presented a draft of the September Newsletter. Announced he had invited Chief Vasquez of the Hacienda La Puente School District Police to speak at the October meeting.
 
Mary Tang/Community Relations: Announced she would attend the Hacienda Heights Woman's Club meeting in early October as part of her outreach responsibility.
 
Mary Varela/Parks & Recreation: Reminded everyone of the next community events, "Casino Royal" to be held at Steinmetz Park on November 6, 2004 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM and the Youth Science Fair on November 19th at the Pacific Palms Conference Hotel, City of Industry.
 
Scarlet Treu/Community Bulletin Board: Announced she would place flyers on the Bulletin Board in the rear of the US Bank next to the Post Office for the announced events.
 
Lucy Pedregon/Public Relations: Was thanked for taking such detailed minutes for July and August by Mike Williams.
 
Luis Rodriquez/Environmental Improvement: Submitted a very detailed report and invited the Board Members and other interested people to tour the Quemetico Plant on Friday, September 24, 2004.
 
Charles Norris/Website: Urged all Board and community members to forward all information about open community events to him for insertion into the website.
 
Tom Chang/Streets and Highways: Presented a very detailed plan of action for this committee. One of the subcommittee members, Tony Wang was introduced. Tony was commended for his civic participation.
 
Rudy Almeida: Submitted his September code enforcement report.
        
Old Business: None
 
New Business: Nominating Committee for Election of Board members for 2005-2007. As required by the by-laws, a Nominating Committee must be formed. Mary Varela and Scott Martin volunteered to serve along with Barbara Fish and two yet to be named HHIA members. The committee is required to report at the October and November board meetings.
 
Meeting adjourned at 9:40 P.M.  The next meeting will be held on October 18, 2004 at 7:00 P.M.
