Law Enforcement
Updates: Neither the California Highway Patrol nor the Sheriff Department's
representatives were able to attend due to budget shortages.
Program: The Chief of Police, Albert Vasquez, of the Hacienda - La Puente
Unified School District made an outstanding presentation on his Department
of Police and Safety. His staff consists of five post-certified officers
and 25 security officers distributed among the five high school sectors.
Chief Vasquez has extensive law enforcement experience and will be a
great asset to our community. The audience gave him a standing ovation
for his interesting and informative presentation.
President's report: Mike Williams announced several community events
deserving support: October 24 Oktoberfest at the Hacienda Heights Women's
Club, November 6 Casino Night at the Steinmetz Center, November 19 Youth
Sciences Center 20th Anniversary Gala at Pacific Palms Resort, and the
December 1 Public Safety Recognition Luncheon sponsored by Supervisor
Knabe.
Community Interest Reports: Dickie Simmons, Deputy to Supervisor Knabe,
reminded everyone of the opportunity to sponsor the Public Safety luncheon
as follows: Corporate Sponsors - $1,000 receive 10 seats, Platinum Sponsors
- $500 receive 6 seats, Gold Sponsors - $250 receive 4 seats, Silver
Sponsors - $150 receive 2 seats. Individual tickets are $25 each.
HHIA's representative on the Puente Hills Landfill Citizens Advisory
Committee - Mike Hughes - discussed the latest activities at the landfill.
Wildlife Corridor JPA representative - Steve Feld - announced he had
been elected President of the JPA and discussed current activities.
Board Member and Chair of the Nominating Committee, Mary Varela, announced
that there are seven candidates, requiring an election process.
Due to the lateness of the hour, Mike Williams requested Board Members
to file their reports with the Secretary.
Old Business: Mike Williams nominated Al Baez to fill the seat vacated
by Nancy Abbott, seconded by Charles Norris. Al presented his qualifications
and interest in serving and was elected by the Board for the remainder
of Nancy's term ending in January 2005.
New Business: Mike Williams introduced a motion to support the Public
Safety Appreciation luncheon by reserving a table for four at the Gold
Sponsorship level of $250. He and the Vice-President will review the
interest of members and select those to attend. Motion was approved.
Mary Tang introduced a motion to support the Youth Sciences Center Anniversary
by purchasing an advertisement in the program in the amount of $150,
seconded by Charles Norris, and approved.
Next meeting of the Board will be on November 15 at 7:00 PM.
