Minutes of the February 26, 2007 Board meeting

The Board approved two motions, one to pay the bill for the 4th of July banners, and another to pay for the continued use of the HHIA website and the webmaster.

L. A. County Sheriff's Deputy Brian Sanford advised that his department and the Public Health Department have targeted illegal vendors, especially those selling fruits and vegetables on the streets. He also reported that the Chinese New Year's event was successful with no traffic accidents. Law enforcement personnel in May will be conducting a "Every 15 Minutes" drunk driving program in front of a high school - a re-enactment of a drunk driver accident - so students can see the tragic effects. COPS team members said that they were moving on transients and gang members who were hanging out at the abandoned Burger King; one arrest was made.

Program: Robert Jamieson, President and CEO of New Horizons Caregivers Group, a 501 (c) 3 organization stated that they provide goods and services to the care giving community. They have free food giveaways and recently sponsored an event at Shady Bend Elementary School. He said that "food insecure" homes have serious effects on children's ability to learn as well as grow. Supervisor Don Knabe provided the organization with a grant for the purchase of the food given away at Shady Bend.

Program: Lisbeth Sinclair, Community Studies, shared their progress regarding the Community Plan and advised that meetings in the community have been and are being conducted seeking input from the residents. Persons wanting to know about these meetings should contact HHIA via our website at Info@HHIA.net and we will pass the information to the consultants.

Jim Starkey, representing Senator Margett's office, listed the committees and boards the Senator sits on. He reviewed several bills both signed into law (910) and vetoed (262) by the Governor.

James Yang, County Public Works, provided an update of the County's graffiti abatement program to include a current look at a patrol abatement method (not a complaint driven program where the team only addresses reported locations). This patrol will monitor principal streets and intersections.

Committee reports form the Board included: Mary Tang, Cyndi Watanabe, Donna Steinmetz, Charles Norris, Jim Snyder, Jean Robson, Mae Chu and Scott Martin.

President Mike Hughes reviewed the president's correspondence and recognized Janet Davidio for her continued support to Hacienda Heights and the HHIA Board. He also introduced Jodi Hennesey as a possible new Board Member.
