Minutes of the February 27, 2006 Board meeting

Approved motions: HHIA goals for 2006, Board Members committee assignments, letter to Dickie Simmons supporting Supervisor Knabe's suggestion to install an electronic message board to advertise local events with a request for a proposed installation date, award a plaque or other form of acknowledgement to Lewis Cabriales on his retirement, secure copies of the City of Industry codes pertaining to signage for gentlemen's clubs.

Dickie Simmons reported on the community planning meeting: 64 persons attended, consultants conducted a Q&A for the meeting and will summarize and distribute the comments and suggestions to the attendees. The Medical Marijuana Ordinance hearing is set for the Board of Supervisors on March 28. Reminded everyone to call 1-800-675-HELP to report potholes, graffiti, etc. Supervisor Knobe has budgeted for cameras for possible use on the enforcement of graffiti abatement. Code enforcement will concentrate on unsightly trash equipment in front yards and residents will be cited.

CHP motor officers reported that they are conducting patrols near schools, the Chinese New Year celebration was twice as big as the prior year, recognized the death of CHP officer Bailey struck while responding to an accident, 7th Avenue north of the 60 freeway is being patrolled for trucks parking illegally, from the first of the year, there were 259 traffic accidents, 2 DUI arrests, and no fatalities.

LA County Sheriff's Deputy, Brain Sanford, reported that they are working on probation violations, illegal street vendors and tagging, juveniles were arrested for burglaries, the County Special Enforcement Team will be deployed next month.

Gerri Guzman, Congresswoman Napolitano's office reported that fake guns shops are becoming a concern of the Congress. Offered if tipping fees are short that Representative Napolitano could seek to attempt additional funding as a line item.

Jim Starkey, representing Senator Bob Margett, advised that the Puente Hills Mall has been sold and is in escrow. Now may be a good time to restore the Sheriff's substation in the mall. Advised that there is some disagreement over the term "infrastructure" in the State legislature which may interfere with the proposed bond issue. June election will have bond proposals for the libraries and the universal pre-school tax.

Carlos Illingworth, representing Assemblyman Calderon, advised that the Corporate ID Theft bill was signed, and the tagging graffiti bill is working its way through committees.

David Wykowski, L.A. Co. Branch Librarian, announced that their children's section has opened providing education to parents as well, and they have a second children's librarian.

Bud Welch, Ombudsman for the Landfill, reported that they are hydro-seeding, 24" box pine and walnut trees are being planted on the far west side, and the recycle facility is open, just south of the Materials Reclamation Facility.
