Minutes of the Month 00, 2003 Board meeting

Board approved sending a letter in support of the grant proposal to provide the Volunteers on Patrol (VOP) with a new vehicle for safety patrols.
CHP motor officers Ben Sotello and Chris Valencia reported that four minors were arrested for tagging, with the assistance of a helicopter. Extra patrols will be conducted at 7th Avenue and the 60 freeway juncture in response to a citizen complaint.


L.A. County Sheriff's Lieutenant Baltazar provided information regarding the shooting of a victim in the hand during a robbery; both suspects ran away and were not caught. Four magazine solicitors were arrested for failure to be licensed. Solicitors are reported to be very aggressive. The department received tips regarding the growing of marijuana and arrests were made.
Town Sheriff Brian Sanford attended Neighborhood Watch meetings where information from residents of Punte del Este advised him of illicit activities at the top of the hill which resulted in arrests and citations. On May 23, the department will conduct the "Every 15 Minutes" program at Los Altos High School to stress the importance of not drinking and driving. He is still working on code enforcement with NAT, who is resolving about 12 cases per month. The COPS team introduced Lt. Harris and Deputy Milke. While conducting probation compliance checks, multiple arrests were made. They are working with other County departments on issues at Schabarum Park. They followed up on a house with suspicious activities, maybe narcotics sales. Arrests were made of street gang members with marijuana sales in progress.


Mike Hughes advised that Landfill Ombudsman, Bud Welch, would be unable to make his quarterly report due to surgery.


Jeff Lambert and Ann McIntosh provided a brief update on the Puente Hills Landfill Community Benefit Mitigation Fund Investment. and ongoing planning regarding the use of tipping fees. Approximately $21.8 million is expected to be in the trust fund over the ten year period. Community input for such usage has been coming in for about one and one-half years. They distributed documents describing the tentative plans including looking at maps and rendering of current suggestions. Residents were encouraged to continue providing written input.


Dickie Simmons, Supervisor Knabe's Field Deputy, called attention to the May 23 Taste of the Heights at Pathfinder Park. A hazardous waste and e-waste collection will take place on July 14 at Rowland Heights High School. He described the current model of the graffiti abatement team and how they are capturing images to load into a data base (Graffiti Tracker System). The Community Connection newsletter will be mailed to all households in June. Concerts in the Park will begin on July 10.
