21, 2005 Board meeting
The nominating
committee reported that Sanee Lee, local business woman with extensive
educational background, is willing to serve on the Board of Directors.
Motion was made and approved to add Ms Lee to the Board.
The nominating committee also noted that no additional persons to the
incumbent Board members had expressed an interest in serving, and a
motion was made and approved to retain the incumbents who had expressed
a desire to continue their service for another term. This action
eliminated the need for a costly election.
The Treasurer reported that the 50th Anniversary event expended $4,796.44,
deposits of $4,376 were made, with a month ending bank account balance
of $6,306.23.
Law enforcement safe community discussion was provided by Sheriff's
Deputy Brian Sanford and CHP Officer Stage. A gang murder of a
15 year old resulted in the arrest of the alleged shooter. LASD
Detective Steve Skahill described the gang problems in Hacienda Heights
and surrounding communities and advised that ours is a safe community
with little gang activity. Deputy Sanford stated that the Sheriff's
Department had recently apprehended a drug dealer.
Several persons in the audience expressed an interest in reviving the
Neighborhood Watch program and volunteered to participate. Others
indicated that there are many families with both adults working which
makes it difficult to serve.
Chief Vasquez, Hacienda-La Puente School District police force, described
the safety precautions in schools, and programs to intervene in gang
related issues. After school programs on school property are supposed
to be under supervision. School Police should be called in instances
when that does not appear to be the case. Parents speeding away
from schools are a problem to the crossing guards. Children crossing
the streets to waiting parents cars are a big problem and very
dangerous.
Captain Smith, LACO Sheriff's Dept, said that the deputies are
only as good as the community's eyes, and urged people to notify the
Sheriff when they see things are amiss. The department is really
concentrating on taggers.
Dickie Simmons, Supervisor Knabe's field deputy, talked about the progress
in parks improvements, urged people to call the graffiti hotline to
get paint-oversee, homeless shelters will be opening on December 1 through
March 15, Public Works Department is looking into an electronic billboard
installation near Halliburton and Hacienda for community announcements.
The temporary injunction on the marijuana dispensary is still in place
and legislation to correct the situation is being prepared. Dickie
will be meeting with CalTrans to discuss the HOV lane and the sound
walls. Construction on the Harbor underpass for the animal habitat
is making progress.
