Minutes of the November 21, 2005 Board meeting

The nominating committee reported that Sanee Lee, local business woman with extensive educational background, is willing to serve on the Board of Directors.  Motion was made and approved to add Ms Lee to the Board.

The nominating committee also noted that no additional persons to the incumbent Board members had expressed an interest in serving, and a motion was made and approved to retain the incumbents who had expressed a desire to continue their service for another term.  This action eliminated the need for a costly election.

The Treasurer reported that the 50th Anniversary event expended $4,796.44, deposits of $4,376 were made, with a month ending bank account balance of $6,306.23.

Law enforcement safe community discussion was provided by Sheriff's Deputy Brian Sanford and CHP Officer Stage.  A gang murder of a 15 year old resulted in the arrest of the alleged shooter.  LASD Detective Steve Skahill described the gang problems in Hacienda Heights and surrounding communities and advised that ours is a safe community with little gang activity.  Deputy Sanford stated that the Sheriff's Department had recently apprehended a drug dealer.

Several persons in the audience expressed an interest in reviving the Neighborhood Watch program and volunteered to participate.  Others indicated that there are many families with both adults working which makes it difficult to serve.

Chief Vasquez, Hacienda-La Puente School District police force, described the safety precautions in schools, and programs to intervene in gang related issues.  After school programs on school property are supposed to be under supervision.  School Police should be called in instances when that does not appear to be the case.  Parents speeding away from schools are a problem to the crossing guards.  Children crossing the streets to waiting parents cars are a big problem and very dangerous.

Captain Smith, LACO Sheriff's Dept, said that the deputies are only as good as the community's eyes, and urged people to notify the Sheriff when they see things are amiss.  The department is really concentrating on taggers.

Dickie Simmons, Supervisor Knabe's field deputy, talked about the progress in parks improvements, urged people to call the graffiti hotline to get paint-oversee, homeless shelters will be opening on December 1 through March 15, Public Works Department is looking into an electronic billboard installation near Halliburton and Hacienda for community announcements.  The temporary injunction on the marijuana dispensary is still in place and legislation to correct the situation is being prepared.  Dickie will be meeting with CalTrans to discuss the HOV lane and the sound walls.  Construction on the Harbor underpass for the animal habitat is making progress.
