Key milestones in the history of the Hacienda Heights Improvement Association (HHIA) and the community it serves.
1947
Edwin Dow and other visionaries founded the HHIA, originally named the North Whittier Heights Improvement Association.
1955
HHIA became incorporated.
1960
A preliminary Master Plan of land use was drafted.
1962
The local community was renamed Hacienda Heights.
1969
HHIA funded Hacienda Heights entrance signs: “Hacienda Heights, Growing with Pride.”
1970
Palm trees planted along Hacienda Boulevard.
1973
Ruth Dryden became HHIA’s first woman president.
1979
HHIA initiated the “Dump the Dump” group opposing expansion of Puente Hills Landfill.
1988
The first Hacienda Heights 4th of July Parade was organized.
1992
HHIA participated in efforts leading to environmental protections and funding for preservation of Puente Hills open space.
1995
Jim Davis Beautification Day began.
2000
Puente Hills Wildlife Corridor expanded preservation efforts.
2005
HHIA celebrated its 50th Anniversary of incorporation.
2013
Closure of Puente Hills Landfill.
2018
HHIA celebrated its 70th Anniversary.
2023
HHIA celebrated its 75th Anniversary and continued community advocacy and public meetings.
